A modern, imposing project evoking the outline of the Langhe hills and in keeping with the surrounding landscape. This is how the new Terra da vino winery at Barolo (Cuneo) was conceived by the famous Piedmontese architect Gianni Arnaudo. The project is based on a reinterpreted cultural vision, which blends distinguishing marks, materials and colors of one of the most beautiful wine territories in the world. Arnaudo, a representative of the radical school of Architecture, promoted by Studio 65 in the Seventies, is now a professor of Environmental Technology at the Turin Politecnico. For the winery at Barolo, he has designed one of the most interesting and innovative structure in Italy.
In the new Terra da vino winery, walls are decorated with maize-colored stripes, while the color of the roofing reminds of copper sulphate, generally used in vineyards. The curved wood of the basic structure clearly recalls materials and techniques related to barrels’ production. The building in the foreground, where offices and the winery are housed, shows the “genetic” characteristics of rural architecture: the curved tile-roof, the particular reddish color of the walls, the balconies, together with some almost forgotten and rediscovered elements. For example, the wooden maize-drying rack, once present in every farmhouse in autumn, is here proposed in a modern technological version, creating airy, ventilated walls and particular chromatic effects.

A skywalk of steel, wood and crystal connects the different parts of the building, dedicated to the various phases of wine production, all the way to the bottling area. In the final part of the itinerary, the visitor walks on a bridge suspended by steel cables to curved, wooden rafters, over a sea of barriques in the half-light of the cellar. At the end, from a full-length window in the shape of a “tub“, you can enjoy a particular view of the Barolo hills and the Langhe landscape with the typical, geometric arrangement of its vineyards. The project is to be completed with an organic orchard in the farm estate, where experiments will be carried out with special grape varieties and half extinct fruit trees.
